Clinical Psychologist Psychiatrist. Who Does What?

Each type of mental health worker will has different qualifications, training, and experience. as well as different areas of specialty.

Generalist Psychologists

Psychologists provide assessment and therapy to clients, either through individual or group format.

Psychologists typically complete a minimum of six years of training, including university and practical experience, and are required to be registered with the Psychology Board of Australia.

Clinical psychologists

Clinical psychologists also provide a range of psychological services to people across their life (such as assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental illness).

Clinical psychologists complete additional supervision and training in the practice of clinical psychology beyond their six years of university. They are required to be involved in ongoing training and study during their careers within a ‘scientist-practitioner’ model.

Psychiatrists

Psychiatrists are doctors who specialize in mental health. They diagnose and treat people with mental illness and prescribe medications, if appropriate.

Psychiatrists usually complete 4-6 years of an undergraduate medical degree and then undergo general medical training. They complete several years of specialist training in psychiatry and must be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

Bulk Billing Policy and Remote Access Internet Video Services

Impact Health offers a number of pricing and payment options for those accessing services.
If you have a MENTAL HEALTH CARE PLAN from your GP and a health care card or pensioner discount card we can BULK BILL and provide you a free service.

Otherwise, small Gap fees are charged with a Mental Health Care Plan (obtained from your general practitioner, GP).
We can also BULK BILL all patients with a MENTAL HEALTH CARE PLAN and live in remote areas of Australia. This means if you live in a remote area and have a Mental Health Care Plan we can provide you with a psychologist via video.
A telehealth service is a psychological therapy service that is delivered via video conference where both a visual and audio link has been established between a patient and their treating allied health professional. Telehealth services can be delivered by psychologists, social workers and occupational therapists that are registered with Medicare.

Eligible patients are required to have a Mental Health Treatment Plan and be located in a rural and remote area, namely, Modified Monash Model areas 4-7. To find out if you are located in an eligible area, please visit the MMM locator, select the ‘MMM classification’ and enter the location.
